  • Individual life insurance
  • Individual disability insurance
  • Group dental insurance
  • Long-term care insurance

Navigating the sea of available policies can be confusing, but with our friendly and helpful agents, you won’t have to do it alone.

Not all Medicare Advantage plans in Hawaii are created equal. Different insurance carriers often offer similar plans, but depending on the details, one may end up being better for you than the others.

At Proinsurance Hawaii, we represent all available insurance carriers in Hawaii, giving you as many options as possible. With an array of plans to choose from and expert guidance to help you make your decision, you’ll be well on your way to better health with Proinsurance Hawaii.

Getting Medicare in Hawaii is much more complex than just qualifying and signing up. As you’ve already discovered, there’s an entire world of Medicare policies, and what gets covered can vary drastically from one policy to the next.

You may be fortunate enough to end up with a plan that covers everything you need, even if you go about selecting your plan without a clear understanding of what you’re getting into. Still, if you’re unlucky, you could find yourself dealing with unexpected gaps in coverage and hefty medical bills to boot.

Some Medicare policies also have overlapping coverage, which means that — if you don’t read the details of each policy carefully — you could end up paying far more than you need to for coverage.

Thankfully, our experts have been in the field for years and know all there is to know about Medicare policies. We’ll help you understand the various types of Medicare plans and supplements to ensure you sign up for a great health plan at a great price.

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is a comprehensive form of Medicare that includes both Part A (hospital coverage or inpatient) and Part B (medical coverage or outpatient) coverage. It usually also includes Part D benefits, which cover prescription drugs.

There are different types of Medicare Advantage plans to choose from, too. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans have a network of healthcare providers that offer services at a discounted rate. You can visit providers outside of the established network, but you’ll end up paying a higher rate. PPO plans are more flexible, so they also tend to have higher premiums.

In comparison, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans are very affordable, but they are also more restrictive. With an HMO plan, out-of-network care is not covered at all, and you’ll need a referral from your primary care physician in order to see a specialist. However, the trade-off is that copays and monthly premiums for HMO plans are typically very low.

There are also specialized Medicare Advantage programs you may qualify for if you have special needs. The Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNP) program is available for those on both Medicare and Medicaid who are 65 or older, have an end-stage renal disease (ESRD) amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or have received at least two years’ worth of Social Security Disability Benefits.

Chronic Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) are designed for those with certain health conditions that require consistent specialized care. There are many health conditions that qualify you for a C-SNP, including cancer, autoimmune disorders, disabling mental health conditions, and HIV/AIDS, as just a few examples.

“Original Medicare” includes Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Broadly speaking, Part A covers inpatient services, while Part B covers outpatient services. For some, particularly those without any chronic health conditions, the combination of Part A and Part B coverage may be enough, but for individuals with existing health conditions or those who just want more extensive coverage, a Medicare Supplement Plan may be necessary to fill in any gaps left behind by Parts A and B.

Medicare Part D is a different Medicare plan that offers prescription drug coverage. It’s ideal if you take regularly-prescribed medications for one or more chronic conditions.

Some Medicare Advantage plans come with Part D, though with others, you will need to purchase it as a policy add-on. You can still get Medicare Part D coverage even if you don’t have a Medicare Advantage plan, and if you have Original Medicare, you can also opt to purchase Part D as a separate plan.

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, can be a smart investment if you anticipate care for a condition that is not covered by your existing plan. Medigap is not offered by Medicare — it is coverage sold by third-party companies.

Some Medigap policies are designed to help you manage the out-of-pocket costs that come with your existing Medicare plan. You may be able to find a plan that covers your Part A or Part B deductible, your copayments, or your coinsurance. Select Medigap plans will also cover emergency medical bills if you suffer a medical event in a foreign country, and others will cover the cost of skilled nursing facilities.

These plans can be helpful to have, and in some circumstances, they may even save you a decent amount of money, but Medigap policies can cover vastly different costs, and they can be challenging to sort through.

Furthermore, since these policies aren’t offered by Medicare, finding the right insurance provider can quickly become a headache. At Proinsurance Hawaii, we work with a number of insurance companies offering quality Medigap policies, and we can help you choose one that meets your needs.

You may believe that all of your dental, vision, and hearing needs would be covered by your Medicare plan, but with most plans, coverage ranges from limited to outright nonexistent.

For example, Medicare Part B will cover some medically necessary vision procedures, but that coverage doesn’t include routine eye exams or corrective lenses. Medicare also does not cover dental procedures (unless the dental work is part of another covered and medically-necessary procedure).

If you’re in the market for a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be able to purchase dental, vision, and hearing policies as part of the plan, and you can still purchase them as stand-alone policies.

Whether you’re a business owner looking for Hawaii group health insurance or an individual looking for Medicare or life insurance, Proinsurance Hawaii has your back. We’ll be with you on every part of your journey, from deciding what type of insurance you need to narrowing down your choices and finalizing your plan.
