How to Pick a Medicare Supplement Plan
Medicare Supplement Plans are plans offered by private insurers meant to help you reduce your out-of-pocket expenses associated with Original Medicare. For an additional monthly premium, these plans cover the out-of-pocket expenses that you would normally have to pay with Original Medicare. For example, Original Medicare Part A covers hospital costs for a certain number of days, but the patient is responsible for costs after that time period. Supplement plans can cover that additional cost.
Although private insurers offer these plans, they must adhere to the ten templates set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These ten plans are: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N. Each of these templates covers out-of-pocket costs to a different extent. While private insurance companies can offer these plans at different rates, they have to adhere to the coverage rates outlined by each of these templates. Plans C and F are no longer offered to people who are newly eligible for Medicare as of January 2020. Plans F and G are special because they have a high deductible option.
